  4. Italy. Levi Strauss (1830-1902), a Bavarian
  5. immigrant to the USA, made sturdy trousers
  6. for goldminers in San Francisco out of jean
  7. material intended for wagon covers. Hence
  8. they became known as `Levis'. Later a French
  9. fabric, serge de Nimes (corrupted to
  10. `denim'), was used.
